E DAGGAR ART / LIZ

I make representational works on paper in the forms of of drawings, paintings, and hand-pulled prints. My work centers around atmospheric stories of place, working from reference photos of the places I live and travel.

My favorite kind of imagery by other artists tends to feel timeless and at least a little bit difficult to pin down. Maybe it’s a little unsettling or like it}s hiding a secret or two. I’m drawn to images that invite different interpretations each time you look, the way a book takes on new meaning when you re-read it years later.

The mark-making and exploration in my works have become a way to connect with emotions and memories by blocking out the thinky part of my brain, and immersing myself in the process. Analog tools and materials are perfect for this because they ground me in an essentially physical endeavor. That's not always enough, so I often listen to audiobooks or podcasts while working, too, so that the part of my brain that latches onto words is safely away from trying to control what my hands are doing. Freedom to play without the inner critic hanging around is esential.

 

While drawing and painting, I work pretty organically; feel my way through it guided by curiosity, instinct, and a familiarity with the medium. In the case of etching, there’s not a lot of room for distraction. It's both a physical and chemical undertaking that requires attention and planning. Lately I’ve been doing more drypoint plates, too, which are allow more room to experiement and work quickly.

 

In all of these mediums, the process of making helps to block out the noise, connect me to to my inner world, and help me forge a language that communicates to the inner worlds of others.
